The Spinning Jenny
The Industrial Revolution (1760-1850) began in England and spread throughout Europe and the Americas within several decades. The Industrial Revolution didn't reach America until the 1820s and only started with the textile industries in the northeast. The spinning jenny was created by James Hargreaves, in 1764 . The spinning jenny reduced the amount of work that was needed to produce yarn. It only needed one worker, and that worker would be able to work eight or more spools at once. Railroads in Europe
Railroads became more common throughout Europe, and the spread of railroads happened rapidly. The Liverpool and Manchester Railroads created a type of train that could carry passengers as well as freight. This created an increase in the making of railroads in Europe after 1830. In the 1800s, the amount of track being laid increased. In 1830, Britain had only 95 miles of track. That amount will grow to 1500 miles by 1840 and 6600 miles by 1850. |
Spread of Industrialization
An increase in the population of workers, created a higher demand for jobs. Britain had many valuable natural resources including: water power and coal to fuel new machines, iron ore, rivers for inland transportation by boats, and large harbors for trading ships to port. By 1880, Industrialization had almost spread to all parts of Europe. Industrialization was crucial to Europe's advancement because without it, there wouldn't have been such a large amount of new inventions and ideas. |
