Division of Africa
In 1884-85, the Berlin Conference set up ground rules for Europeans claiming territory in Africa. There was no African representatives invited to the Berlin Conference. This map shows that the European countries were very eager to claim territories in Africa. After the Berlin Conference, nearly every European country had claimed a large or small portion of Africa. |
The Sepoy Mutiny
In the middle to late 1800's, rumors began to spread that the British were greasing the bullets with animal fat. Specifically, cow fat and pig fat. These two animals were sacred to the Muslims and the Hindus who made up a large amount of the army in India. The Muslim and Hindu soldiers decided to rise up against the British for this act. This is a bullet cartridge, that was most likely distributed to the two groups by the British. |
Colonial Rule in Southeast Asia
Britain, the British East India Company, started colonizing areas in Southeast Asia. Starting with Penang, the British began to expand their Southeast Asian empire. They also took over Dutch territories. The British established Singapore as a key trading post for Britain in their rivalry with the Dutch. |
